Adolescents and young people in Cameroon continue to face significant sexual and reproductive health challenges, including limited access to contraceptive information and services, inadequate comprehensive sexuality education, and social and cultural barriers that contribute to unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions. These challenges are particularly pronounced in rural communities, where access to youth-friendly reproductive health services remains limited.
To better understand these realities, we conducted a quantitative cross-sectional study across eleven communities in the health districts of Buea, Limbe, and Tiko in the South West Region of Cameroon. The study engaged 2,018 participants aged 11 years and above from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The research sought to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of adolescents and young people regarding contraceptive methods and to identify demographic and contextual factors influencing contraceptive use. Specifically, the study examined levels of contraceptive knowledge, attitudes toward contraception, patterns of use, barriers to effective utilization, and factors shaping reproductive health behaviors.
The findings of this study provide critical baseline evidence to inform the design and implementation of responsive, youth-centered reproductive health interventions. By generating community-level insights, the research aims to support evidence-based programming and contribute to improving sexual and reproductive health outcomes for adolescents and young people in rural Cameroon.
