Strengthening Menstrual Health Dignity Among Sex Workers in South West Cameroon
Sex workers in Cameroon’s South West Region often face significant barriers to managing their menstrual health with dignity, including stigma, poverty, unsafe working conditions, and limited access to menstrual health information and products. Through the Sang Pour Sang project, we implemented targeted, rights-based menstrual health dignity education across hotspot communities in Limbe and Buea.
Using a pre–post intervention approach, the project reached 84 sex workers, with 39 participants completing both assessments. Findings showed a substantial improvement in knowledge, with average scores increasing from 76% at baseline to 95% after the intervention—a statistically significant 19% gain. Knowledge improvements were observed across all age groups and locations, demonstrating the effectiveness of tailored, community-based menstrual health education.
The findings provide important evidence that feminist-informed and dignity-centered interventions can improve menstrual health knowledge among sex workers and strengthen efforts to address health inequities and gender-based vulnerabilities in underserved communities.
